Renes Named Scholar-Athlete by Football Foundation

This prestigious distinction, established in 1959, is based on superior academic performance, outstanding football ability, strong leadership and citizenship. Renes will be awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will be honored at the Foundation's 42nd Annual Award Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on Dec. 7, 1999.
A German and social studies major, Renes maintains a 3.55 cumulative grade point average. He is a 1998 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second-Team selection, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree and a two-time GTE Academic All-District IV selection. Renes is a two-time recipient of the Dr. Arthur Robinson Student-Athlete Award, given annually to the top Michigan football student-athlete. He serves the community as a member of the SHARE elementary school reading program and the Ottawa County (Mich.) DARE program, and is an educational speaker at his high school.
On the field, Renes leads the Michigan defensive line in tackles this season (35) while recording three tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery. He has been named a 1999 Lombardi Award semifinalist and is a candidate for the Bronko Nagurski Award presented to the nation's top defensive player. Renes has started 32 consecutive games at nose tackle for the Wolverines and serves as the team's long snapper. He has 140 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, five sacks and three fumble recoveries in his career.
Michigan's previous recipients of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete award are: Bob Timberlake, 1964; Dave Gallagher, 1973; Kirk Lewis, 1975; Norm Betts, 1981; Stefan Humphries, 1983; Chris Hutchinson, 1992; Brian Griese, 1997.
