STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped 2-1 decision with No. 5 Penn State Sunday (Oct. 3) at PSU's Bigler Athletic Complex.
The game was tight throughout, but Penn State (10-2, 2-1 Big Ten) was able to hold off Michigan (8-4, 2-1 Big Ten) down the stretch of the game and end U-M's five-game winning streak. The Lady Lions opened the scoring with 24:12 remaining in the first half, but Wolverine Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield-Mount Hermon HS) tied the game 7:44 later with her seventh goal of the season.
The game was tied at the half and for nearly 20 minutes in the second half, but the Lady Lions sealed the win with Traci Anselmo's goal with 15:18 remaining in the game. Michigan had some chances late in the second half, but Penn State goalkeeper Heidi Leuchte made a key save on a breakaway by Reid late in the game that preserved the win for the Nittany Lions. The two teams will meet again Oct. 29 at Ocker Field.
Michigan will return to action next week as it hosts Iowa on Friday (Oct. 8) at 3 p.m. at Ocker Field.
