Michigan Breaks 1,000,000 Fans for Season
With today's announced crowd of 111,575 fans against Ohio State, the University of Michigan has surpassed 1,000,000 fans for the third straight season and the 24th time in the last 25 years. Michigan finished the six-game home schedule with 666,049 fans and the five away games drew 343,537 fans for an 11-game total of 1,009,586 fans.
No. 50
With the victory, Michigan finished with a 50-12-1 record at Michigan Stadium during the 1990s. Further, at 9-2, the Wolverines posted their second best regular-season record under head coach Lloyd Carr.
ABC Players of the Game
Michigan's Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, La./Winnfield HS) and Ohio State's Michael Wiley were named ABC Television's Players of the Game. Thomas carried the ball 31 times for 111 yards with one touchdown and caught five passes for 51 yards. Wiley ran the ball 22 times for 92 yards, caught one pass for eight yards and threw a pass for 21 yards.
Turnovers = Points
Michigan converted three second-half Ohio State turnovers -- two interceptions and a fumble -- into 17 points. DeWayne Patmon (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) hauled in Michigan's first pick of the game early in the third quarter, his team-leading third of the season and the eighth of his career. Patmon returned the interception 32 yards to the Ohio State 23-yard line, setting up a 42-yard Hayden Epstein (Cardiff, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) field goal.
Late in the third quarter, Ian Gold (Belleville, Mich./Belleville HS) recorded his second career INT, which he returned to the OSU eight-yard line. Michigan scored a touchdown on the next play from scrimmage to tie the game 17-17. The Wolverines took the lead after James Whitley (Norfolk, Va./Norview HS) forced a fumble that was recovered by Cato June (Washington, D.C./Anacostia HS) at the Michigan 23-yard line. After the fumble, Michigan marched 77 yards in 10 plays for the game-winning touchdown.
First-Quarter Blues
Michigan has not scored a first-quarter point against Ohio State since 1995, a span of four quarters. During the stretch, Ohio State has posted four scores (three touchdowns and a field goal) for a 24-0 edge in opening-quarter scoring. The Wolverines trailed 3-0 after the first quarter in 1996 before coming back to win 13-9. In 1997, the game was scoreless after one period in an eventual 20-14 Michigan victory. Last season the Buckeyes grabbed a 14-0 first-quarter advantage in a 31-16 OSU win. Ohio State had a 7-0 lead after the first quarter this season.
No. 60
Senior fullback Aaron Shea (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa HS) recorded his 60th career reception late in the first quarter, a one-yard catch on second down. The catch was Shea's 30th of the season as he has recorded at least one reception in every game this season and in 16 consecutive games dating back to last season. He ended the game with two receptions for seven yards.
400th Connection
Senior quarterback Tom Brady (San Mateo, Calif./Serra HS) recorded his 400th career reception with a seven-yard pass to David Terrell (Richmond, Va./Huguenot HS) on Michigan's first touchdown drive in the second quarter. Brady connected on his 30th career touchdown pass with an eight-yard throw to Shawn Thompson (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel HS) late in the third quarter. He would throw for his 31st TD pass on the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. Brady ended the game 17-of-27 for 150 passing yards and the two touchdowns. Brady threw a touchdown pass in all 16 starts of his Big Ten career.
A.T. = TD
Junior tailback Anthony Thomas capped Michigan's first touchdown drive with a one-yard dive up the middle. The scamper was Thomas' 16th score of the season and 35th of his career, both the second highest totals in school history. Thomas, who has rushed for a TD is seven consecutive games, needs three more scores to tie Ron Johnson's single-season record of 19 set in 1968, and 12 more to tie the career record of 47 established by Tyrone Wheatley (1991-94). Thomas ended the game with 31 carries for 111 yards, his fifth consecutive 100-yard game and his seventh this season. He also led the team with five receptions and 51 receiving yards.
Thompson's First Score
Redshirt freshman Shawn Thompson caught his first career touchdown pass, an eight-yard grab-and-run with 37 seconds left in the third quarter, tying the game 17-17. Thompson ended the game with three receptions for 37 yards.
