Wolverines Fall to Falcons on the Road
12/3/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Michigan (11-5-0, 7-4-0 CCHA) took the early lead when Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) fired the puck from the slot past Bowling Green's Tyler Masters with the Wolverines on the power play. Michigan held the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, Bowling Green (5-9-0, 5-7-0 CCHA) scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. On the first goal, the Falcons used a two-on-one rush to tie the game. Austin de Luis passed the puck from the right side through a Michigan defender to Adam Edinger, who was waiting on the far side and netted the puck past Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) halfway through the period. Four minutes later, de Luis beat O'Malley to give Bowling Green the lead.
With 1:45 remaining in the second, Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) tied the game after going coast-to-coast and beating three Falcon defenders before firing the puck over Masters' glove hand.
With the game tied 2-2 after two periods, Michigan came out rushing but couldn't find the net. With 16:23 remaining in the game, Bowling Green's Tyler Knight scored the eventual game-winning goal after a scrum in front of the net. Michigan continued to get chances, but Masters stopped them all.
After Mihigan pulled O'Malley with just over a minute to play, the Falcons scored the final goal when de Luis netted the empty-net goal. Shortly after the goal, a scuffle broke out on the ice. When the dust cleared, Bowling Green's Ryan Murphy and Michael Jones and Michigan's J.J. Swistak (W. Bloomfield, Mich.) all received game disqualification penalties and will not be eligible for Saturday's (Dec. 4) game in Ann Arbor.
O'Malley played a strong game but suffered the loss despite making 20 saves on the night. Bowling Green's Masters earned the win, stopping 29 of 31 shots.
The Falcons and the Wolverines return to the ice tomorrow night (Dec. 4) at Yost Ice Arena in the second game of a home-and-home series. The start time is 7:05 p.m.
