Michigan Wrestlers Take Steam Out of Boilermakers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8 University of Michigan wrestling team wrestled its way to a 27-11 victory over No. 15 Purdue in front of a small but boisterous Cliff Keen Arena crowd of 507. The Wolverines won seven of 10 matches, including three major decisions and one pin, to improve their record to 9-4 (4-2 Big Ten).

The meet began at 141 pounds, and sophomore Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) got the Maize and Blue out to an early 3-0 lead with his 10-4 decision over Purdue's Carlos Blanco. Michigan was victorious in three of the first five matches, wrestling to a 10-8 lead at the intermission.

Freshman 184-pounder Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward's HS) opened the second half of the meet with a 14-6 major decision over Phil Holmgren. The victory, Hrovat's 25th of the season, moved him into a tie for 10th place in Michigan history for wins by a freshman. Wolverine volunteer assistant coach John Fisher holds the record with a 45-10 mark set in the 1984-85 season.

The Maize and Blue cruising to victory by controlling the remainder of the meet, highlighted by 197-pounder Dane Tabano's (Garfield, N.J./Bergen Catholic HS) first career dual meet victory, a pin over Jared Williams.

U-M will return to the mat at Cliff Keen Arena to face Penn State on Friday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
