Austin spent three seasons as the defensive backs coach at Syracuse (1996-98) and three years at Wake Forest (1993-95). Prior to his tenure with those programs, Austin worked as a graduate assistant coach at Penn State for two seasons (1991-92).
While at Syracuse, Austin coached All-Americans Donovin Darius and Kevin Abrams. Darius also was named The BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year for 1997, and went on to become a first-round NFL Draft pick last season with fellow defensive back Tebuckey Jones (first time in Syracuse history that the Orangemen had two players selected in the first round).
Austin is a 1988 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in communications. He was a three-year starter and four-year letterman (1984-87) for the Panthers, and played in the 1984 Fiesta and 1987 Bluebonnet bowls.
Upon graduation, Austin competed in the Washington Redskins and Hamilton Tiger-Cats training camps before playing for the World League of American Football's Montreal Machine in 1991.
Austin and his wife, April, are the parents of four children. They have three sons, Tyler, Trey and Torin, and a daughter, Alexa.
