Wolverines Tie Second Consecutive Game with Broncos
2/19/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Despite the final score, Michigan started out strong, going into the locker room after the first period with a 3-1 lead. Senior Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored the opening goal at the 6:37 mark, but Western responded just 15 seconds later with its first goal.
However, Michigan came back when Mike Van Ryn (London, Ontario) shot from the point and Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.) took the rebound around the back of the net and found an opening for his third goal of the season at 9:51 of the period. Michigan closed out the period with the first of its three power-play goals as Mike Comrie's (Edmonton, Alberta) great pass through the crease found Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) waiting for the score at the left edge of the net.
Michigan (17-8-6, 14-6-5 CCHA) added to its score with Langfeld's second power-play goal of the night just 30 seconds into the second period. He found the net in a similar fashion as the first goal when he netted Van Ryn's rebound from the point. The Broncos scored at the 16:30 mark on a power play, but the Wolverines returned the favor and scored with 1:26 left in the period to make it 5-2 when Sean Peach (Langley, B.C) intercepted a clearing pass and shot the puck in from the point for an unassisted, power-play goal.
However, it was all downhill from there as Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) was called for a five-minute checking-from-behind penalty and then received a 10-minute game disqualification for cross checking with just 13 seconds remaining in the second period.
With Greg Crozier (Williamsville, N.Y.) serving the penalty, the Broncos (5-17-8, 4-14-8 CCHA) scored two unanswered power-play goals in the first 3:05 of the period. Then, at the 5:26 mark, goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) was pulled out of the crease after a strong shot from the point. The rebound laid in the paint for a moment before Western's Mark Wilkinson beat Peach to the puck and netted the game-tying goal.
In the overtime period, neither team was able to find the net, despite several chances, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie. Blackburn made 29 saves, while Western's Matt Barnes stopped 25.
Michigan takes on intrastate rival Michigan State, the CCHA leader, tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 20) at Joe Louis Arena at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Detroit.
