Final Regular-Season Home Games for Seniors
Michigan's seven-man senior class of Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Greg Crozier (Williamsville, N.Y.), Greg Daddario (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.), Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.), Sean Ritchlin and Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is playing in its final regular-season home games this weekend at Yost Ice Arena. The class has accumulated 120 wins in three-plus seasons as Wolverines, including 50 wins on home-ice. In the NCAA Tournament, the seniors own a record of 8-1 and have advanced to the Frozen Four each of their first three seasons, winning National Championships in 1996 and 1998.
Berenzweig Named USA Co-Captain for All-Star Series
Senior Bubba Berenzweig has been named a co-captain, with Michigan State's Mike York, of Team USA for the North American College Hockey Championships. The championship is a two-game series between senior all-stars from U.S. colleges and their counterparts from Canadian universities.
Power-Play Peach
Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) scored his second goal of the season last Friday (Feb. 19). Both goals this season for Peach have been on the power play.
No 30-Win Season
With the loss to Michigan State, the Wolverines eliminated the opportunity for a 30-win season. This is the first time since the team finished 24-12-6 in the 1989-90 season that Michigan will not reach 30 wins in a season. The school record is 35 wins, achieved during the 1996-97 season.
The Streak
Michigan's loss to Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 20) extended its winless streak to eight games (0-4-4). That is tied for the seventh-longest winless streak in school history. However, the other four eight-game winless streaks have been worse, as three of them were 0-8-0 and the fourth was a streak of 0-7-1.
The Last Time
The last time Michigan endured at least an eight-game winless streak was the 1988-89 season, when it went 0-7-2 from Nov. 18 to Dec. 16.
Road Blues
In the last nine games away from Yost Ice Arena, Michigan is 0-5-4. In those games, Michigan has been outscored 25-15 and outshot in five of the nine.
This is after going 6-0-2 in the first eight road games of the season. In those games, Michigan held a 24-10 scoring advantage while outshooting the opposition in six of the eight games.
Road Blues II
The last time Michigan suffered a winless streak on the road of nine games was a 12-game losing streak (0-12-0) which spanned the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. It began with a 1-7 loss at Western Michigan on Feb. 23, 1985, and ended with a 6-8 loss at Western Michigan on Dec. 6, 1985.
The last road winless streak of nine games in a single season was part of the above streak, when the Wolverines lost nine consecutive games (0-9-0) starting with a 6-7 loss at Ferris State on Oct. 18, 1985, through the 6-8 loss at Western Michigan on Dec. 6, 1985.
There is a side note to the above: during the losing streak, Michigan also lost two exhibition games to Team Canada on Nov. 1-2, 1985.
Could Be Worse
The longest winless streak on the road in school history is 26 games (0-25-1). It began with a 3-9 loss at Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 7, 1972, and ended with a 3-2 loss at North Dakota on March 3, 1973.
Close, but No Cigar
In the last eight games (0-4-4), the Wolverines have only been outscored 26-19, an average of less than one goal in each of the games.
A Look at the Streaks
The last eight (0-4-4) ...
- Michigan has been outscored 26-19.
- Michigan has averaged 21.9 PIM, compared to 15.5 PIM for the opponents.
- Michigan's 175 penalty minutes include one five-minute major, two 10-minute misconduct penalties and two game misconduct penalties.
- Michigan has been outscored 25-15.
- Michigan has converted four of 49 power-play opportunities (8.2 percent).
- Opponents have converted 10 of 57 power-play chances (17.5 percent). Those 10 goals have been scored in six of the nine games.
- Michigan has 103 more PIM (270-167) and is averaging 30.0 PIM per game to its opponents 18.6 PIM per game.
- Michigan's 270 penalty minutes include four five-minute majors, five 10-minute misconduct penalties, one game misconduct penalty and four game disqualification penalties.
- Michigan has been outscored 8-4 in the first period and 13-6 in the third period.
Josh Langfeld's (Coon Rapids, Minn.) two goals last weekend increased his season total to 16. It marks the first time this season that someone other than Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) has led the team in goals. Comrie is currently second, with 14 goals.
Power Play Note
Michigan has scored 10 of its 34 power-play goals (29.4 percent) in three games. Twice the Wolverines have scored three power-play goals in a game -- Jan. 21 against Bowling Green and Feb. 19 at Western Michigan -- and once they scored four power-play goals, on Nov. 13 vs. Alaska-Fairbanks.
Hard Times in Detroit
The Wolverines have lost five of their last seven games at Joe Louis Arena, dating back to a 3-5 loss to Michigan State on Dec. 28, 1997. The two wins were in the first game of the 1997 and 1998 Great Lakes Invitational.
Winless in February
This weekend against the RedHawks, Michigan is looking for its first win in February. The last time the Wolverines have gone winless in a month was February 1986, when they lost nine consecutive games (0-9-0).
Solid After Two
Michigan is 98-0-4 in the last 102 games when leading after two periods. The streak dates back to Feb. 11, 1995, when Michigan led the University of Illinois-Chicago 4-3 after two periods before falling 5-4 in overtime.
Crunch Time
Senior assistant captain Dale Rominski leads the team and is tied with six others for the national lead with five game-winning goals. Prior to this season, Rominski had played his entire career (109 games) without a game-winning goal.
Bubba on the Prowl ... With New Career High
Senior Bubba Berenzweig leads team defensemen and is third overall on the team in scoring, with 23 points on six goals and 17 assists. Berenzweig topped his previous career high of 19 points, established in both his sophomore and junior seasons, with an assist against Ohio State. With 73 career points, he has now entered Michigan's top 15 defensman scorers in 14th place.
Leading the Way
Freshman Mike Comrie was the first player on the team this season to reach double digits in both goals (14) and assists (18). The last freshman to lead the Wolverines in goals was Denny Felsner (1989-92), who netted 30 goals in the 1988-89 season on his way to leading Michigan in goals for all four of his seasons.
Comrie remains the team's leading scorer with 32 points, six better than Josh Langfeld, the team's second-highest point scorer with 26. The last freshman to lead the team in points was David Roberts (1989-93) in 1989-90, when he scored 21-32-53 in 42 games. The all-time freshman scoring record belongs to Bruno Baseotto (1980), who scored 31-45-76 in 38 games during the 1979-80 season.
Leading the Way II
Mike Comrie leads the team in plus/minus with +16. In acquiring that number, Comrie has been plus in 16 games while finishing just five games with a minus. By finishing -1 on Feb. 6, Comrie broke a string of 19 consecutive games in which he had been even or plus, dating back to Nov. 14, 1998, at Notre Dame.
Racking Up the Minutes
Dale Rominski is fourth on the team in penalty minutes with 64 so far this season. For his career, Rominski has 261 penalty minutes, good for 15th all-time at Michigan. The next players he will pass are John Blum and Aaron Ward, who each accumulated 263 minutes during their careers.
Following close behind is teammate Bobby Hayes, who has 82 PIM this season for a career total of 248 minutes. He is now tied with Greg Natale (1974-77) for 19th all-time at Michigan. The all-time Michigan leader in penalty minutes is Chris Tamer (1990-93) with 515 PIM.
Penalty Free
Sophomore Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) is the only Michigan player with no penalties yet this season. Trainor has appeared in 18 games for the Maize and Blue.
Ironman Competition
Leading the way in the Ironman category are two of the seniors. Bubba Berenzweig and Sean Ritchlin have appeared in each of Michigan's 32 games this season. The other two players who have not missed a game are Mike Comrie and Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.).
