Seniors Help Complete Weekend Sweep of Miami
2/27/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Through two periods, the game was tied 2-2. Mike Van Ryn (London, Ontario) scored the first goal of the game, and Clark added a second goal five minutes into the second period before Miami found the net twice in the second period to tie the score.
However, the final period saw an offensive explosion as Michigan (19-9-6, 16-7-5 CCHA) scored seven goals, including four in a span of just 2:44, to give the Wolverines a season-high nine goals. Berenzweig kick-started the team with a breakaway goal 2:17 in to period before Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) started the rapid-fire scoring at the 4:09 mark. Following Langfeld's goal, Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) scored at 4:35, followed by a Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) goal at 5:06. Comrie closed out the three-minute burst with his second at the 6:52 mark.
Miami (10-19-5, 8-16-4 CCHA) added a third goal, but Crozier found the net on a power play to round out the Wolverines scoring before Miami scored on senior goaltender Greg Daddario (Wilton, Conn.). Daddario entered the game at the 6:10 mark, appearing in goal for the second consecutive game.
Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stopped 11 of 13 shots and earned the win before retiring to the bench at the 5:18 mark of the third period for Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Point Woods, Mich.), who saved three of four shots. Daddario made two saves and allowed the final Miami goal.
Miami's Andy Marsch suffered the loss while making 23 saves. He was replaced by Ian Olsen for the second consecutive night. After entering the game in the third period, Olsen made 10 saves and allowed the final three goals.
Michigan will defy most collegiate Spring Break plans and travel north to Sault Ste. Marie for a game against Lake Superior State on Friday (March 5) before traveling to Northern Michigan for the final regular-season game of the year on Saturday (March 6). Both start times are 7 p.m.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
"Bubba (Berenzweig) changed the whole game when he rushed the puck down the ice on that four-on-four and scored (early in the third period). That seemed to lift our team."
On clinching home-ice for the first round of the CCHA Tournament ...
"It's something we took for granted a number of years before, but with the league being as competitive as it is, this year we had to earn it."
SENIOR CAPTAIN BUBBA BERENZWEIG
"When I came out on the ice today, heard the band playing and saw the stadium was packed again, it felt so good. I got all goose-bumped and teary-eyed before the game even started."
SENIOR ASSISTANT CAPTAIN DALE ROMINSKI
"The fans care and actually stay after the game and want to stay because they support us."
"Everybody says it (collegiate hockey career) goes so quick, and to tell you the truth, it does go quickly. You try to slow things down, but things just increase in speed (as your career progresses.)"
SENIOR ASSISTANT CAPTAIN BOBBY HAYES
"We're not done yet. There's a better way to go out, and that is to go out as champions. I think that would be the best ending."
