SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego pounded out 18 hits and scored runs in the first seven innings to defeat the University of Michigan baseball team 20-7 in the final game of a three-game series Sunday (Feb. 28) at Cunningham Stadium. Michigan, which won the first two games against the Toreros, drops to 2-1 on the season, while USD is now 8-6.
San Diego freshman second baseman Joe Lima led the San Diego offensive barrage as he went 4-for-5 with a double, his first two career home runs, three runs scored and seven runs batted in. Lima's grand slam homer capped a six-run third inning that gave the Toreros an 8-1 lead.
U-M senior center fielder Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) collected three hits in five at bats, including his first homer of the season, while junior left fielder Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in his first Michigan start.
The Toreros scored one run in the first and second innings, got six in the third and then tallied three in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh before U-M freshman lefthander Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) blanked San Diego in the eighth. Trzos struck out three in two innings of work in his college debut.
After a day off, the Wolverines will continue their California swing with a single game at UCLA on Tuesday (March 2) at 3 p.m. PST.
NOTES
• Seniors Jason Alcaraz (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS) and Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS) continued their hot hitting, with each collecting two hits on Sunday. Both players have had at least two hits in each game this season. Alcaraz is 8-for-14 (.571) on the season, while Cervenak is hitting .500 (7-for-14).
• Alcaraz's two hits on Sunday give him 199 for his career, putting him one away from becoming just the eighth Wolverine ever to reach 200 career hits.
