Ninth-Ranked U-M Grapplers Double Up No. 15 Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan wrestling team defeated 15th-ranked intrastate rival Michigan State 22-11 on Friday (Feb. 5) to sweep the season's two matches. In the first meeting (Dec. 11), the Wolverines dominated the Spartans in a 21-9 final.
The Maize and Blue got strong efforts from several individuals. At 149 pounds, No. 14 Corey Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) continued his outstanding wrestling, defeating State's Mike Castillo 10-6. It was the second time this season Grant has defeated Castillo.
At 165 pounds, Jason Rawls (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) got back on track, earning a 12-6 decision in defeating Kevin Speiss for the second time this season. The win gave Michigan a lead it would not relinquish.
Other winners for the Wolverines on the evening included No. 3 Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) at 174 pounds, No. 14 Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward's HS), heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS), No. 7 125-pounder Chris Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS) and No. 5 Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional HS) at 141 pounds. Olson upped his dual meet record to a perfect 12-0 on the season, while Brink's win over No. 15 Matt Lamb came in a 4-3 overtime decision.
At 133 pounds, the feature match of the evening, No. 6 Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) fell to No. 3 Pat McNamara for the third time this season, 7-2.
The Wolverines will face a stern test in their next match as they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to meet the third-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. CST.
