"Vance has displayed the marks of an outstanding coach and he has an extremely bright future. We'll miss him and we wish him all the best, he and his wife, Maggie."
Bedford recently completed his fourth season as Michigan's defensive backs coach. After intercepting just eight passes in 1994 the year before Bedford joined the staff, the Wolverines defense picked off a total of 71 passes in Bedford's four season, including 19 in 1998. Michigan also set a school record with four interception returns for touchdowns this past season.
Bedford helped develop the nation's best pass defense during Michigan's national championship season in 1997 as the Wolverines, led by Heisman Trophy and Thorpe Award winner Charles Woodson, held opponents to 8.8 yards per completion and a 75.79 pass efficiency rating.
A native of Beaumont, Texas, Bedford was a four-year letterman as a cornerback at the University of Texas. He served as an assistant coach at Colorado State (1987-92) and Oklahoma State (1993-94) before coming to Michigan.
