Hayes Helps Wolverines to 3-2 Win Over Bowling Green
3/12/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green started off the scoring at 2:23 in the first period with a goal by Craig Desjarlais. Michigan tied the game at one goal each on a short-handed goal by Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) 13:26 into the first period. Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made the pass to Rominski across the blue line, leading to a breakaway and Rominski's 13th goal of the season. Michigan almost took the lead when Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) hit the crossbar with only a few minutes remaining in the period, but the teams went into the first intermission tied at 1-1.
The Falcons regained the lead with 1:42 left in the second period with a goal from Ryan Murphy giving Bowling Green a 2-1 advantage heading into the final period. However, the Wolverines controlled the third period.
Michigan had two scoring opportunities midway through the period as Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) and Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) had odd-man rushes, but Bowling Green goalie Mike Savard turned away both opportunities. Savard let down his guard at 11:00 into the third with an even-strength goal by Hayes. The play was created by Trainor, who made a cross-ice pass to Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Clark skated in on a 2-on-1 opportunity and slid the puck between the defenseman's leg to Hayes, who banged it in for his fourth goal of the year.
The Wolverines finished out the scoring for the evening with another short-handed goal. With the team skating a 4-on-3, Clark worked the puck free from the corner. Hayes rushed over and dove to knock the puck out of the zone. Huntzicker, just out of the penalty box, picked up the puck from center ice and skated in all alone to tally his third goal of the season and complete the scoring for the game at 3-2.
Bowling Green created some good scoring opportunities, but Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stood his ground as Michigan held on to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Blackburn ended the game with 19 saves on 21 shots, improving his record to 21-9-6.
Michigan will look to close out the series in Game 2 Saturday (March 12) at 7 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
"Well, I told you this would be a great game. It's Bowling Green-Michigan hockey -- end-to-end. It's great for the crowd, but it's rough for the coaches. However, we stayed in the game and the crowd really helped us in the third period."
On Bobby Hayes ...
"I can't say enough. He had a great game. He is a heart-and-soul player, and it's great to see him stand tall."
SENIOR ASSISTANT CAPTAIN DALE ROMINKSI
"Bowling Green had a great power play, but we can't be taking too many penalties. I think tonight we had the most consistent referee we've seen all year. He really kept us honest."
"Winning the first game is huge. Bowling Green is going to be desperate and play with increased effort. This is far from over."
SENIOR ASSISTANT CAPTAIN BOBBY HAYES
"Playoffs are all about desperation hockey. You play hockey for the ring, and a lot of people stepped it up tonight. This gives us a little confidence for tomorrow."
