Jansen Selected by Redskins in NFL Draft Second Round

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- University of Michigan senior right tackle Jon Jansen (Clawson, Mich./Clawson HS) was selected in the second round of the 1999 National Football League Draft by the Washington Redskins on Saturday (April 17). Jansen was the 37th player chosen in the draft and became the 14th Michigan player to be drafted by the Redskins.
Jansen, Michigan's record-holder with 50 consecutive career starts (all at right tackle), capped an outstanding career by garnering First-Team All-America honors by the American Football Coaches Association and receiving Second-Team Academic All-America citations by GTE/CoSIDA. He was named the 1998 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year and is a two-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection. Jansen was a two-time Michigan captain and received the Hugh Radar Award as the program's top offensive lineman as a senior.

Jansen becomes the first Wolverine selected by the Washington Redskins since 1992, when Desmond Howard was the fourth pick of the first round and Matt Elliott was chosen in the 12th round with the 336th overall pick. Prior to the 1992 season, running back Jamie Morris (109th selection, fourth round) was the only other Michigan player selected since the 1976 NFL Draft.
