Wolverines Defeat Minnesota 4-3 for 15th Win of Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After falling behind 1-0 by losing the doubles point, the University of Michigan men's tennis team stormed back with victories at four of the six doubles matches to post a 4-3 win over Minnesota Saturday afternoon (April 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan won its 15th match (15-2 overall) of the season and remained undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 record. Minnesota dropped to 10-10 on the year and 5-3 in Big Ten dual matches.
The Wolverines were swept in doubles for the second consecutive match and for only the second time this season. Michigan rebounded in singles and nearly swept the Golden Gophers, winning its third straight Big Ten match by a 4-3 score. The Wolverines received straight-set victories at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 spots while suffering tough, three-set losses at the No. 2 and No. 5 slots.
Junior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) beat Tyson Parry (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 1 singles slot for his 17th win (17-10) of the campaign and 10th dual match (10-7) of the season. He has compiled a 6-2 Big Ten record this season at the top singles slot.
Fellow junior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) picked up a straight-set win at the No. 2 spot, beating Adam Selkirk (6-1, 6-3). Long lists second on the team in wins (21-8) and dual match victories (14-3) and is tied for second with a 7-1 conference record.
Freshman Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) ended a career-worst four-match losing streak with a straight-set victory over Jan Svensson at the No. 4 spot. McCain won his 10th dual match of the season (10-7) and posted his 16th victory of the campaign (16-14).
The team's leader in victories and only undefeated dual match performer, freshman Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) beat Jorge Duenas in straight sets at the No. 6 spot (6-3, 6-4). Cox picked up his 24th victory (24-4) and remained unbeaten in dual matches with a 17-0 mark. He is a perfect 8-0 in conference matches.
Michigan concludes the regular season and prepares to host the 1999 Big Ten Championships with a pair of home matches next weekend. The Wolverines host No. 2 Illinois (Saturday, April 24, at 1 p.m.) and Northwestern (Sunday, April 25, at 1 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
