IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's golf team turned in a sixth-place finish at the weather-shortened Hawkeye Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa on Saturday and Sunday (April 17-18). The Wolverines carded rounds of 333 and 324 in the 36-hole rain- and snow-soaked event.
Leading the way for Michigan was freshman Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North HS). Bowers carded two rounds of 80 to tie for 11th place, her third top-20 finish of the year. Also finishing in the top 20 for Michigan was another freshman, LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS). Wicks notched rounds of 84 and 79 to finish in a tie for 19th place.
Sophomore Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) finished just two strokes behind Wicks with rounds of 83 and 82 to finish in a tie for 25th place. "Even though I didn't hit the ball well, I am happy with how I finished," explained Talbot. "I was able to hold it together, and the rest of the team was too."
Also competing in the U-M lineup were freshmen Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) and Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS). Playing as an individual, Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) finished in a tie for 23rd, carding rounds of 83 and 81.
"It's nice to see us play some consistent golf," commented Michigan coach Kathy Teichert. "We played all freshmen and sophomores this weekend, and it's easy to see their future here at Michigan is very bright."
Indiana University dominated the tournament, finishing with a two-round total of 614, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Minnesota.
