The ninth-ranked Michigan Wolverines (25-11-6, 17-8-5 CCHA) closed the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to the University of New Hampshire in the second round of the NCAA Tournament's East Regional in Worcester, Mass., on Saturday (March 27). The overtime loss marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons Michigan has ended its year in overtime.
In the first game of the tournament on Friday (March 26), the Wolverines fell behind 3-0 to the University of Denver before coach Red Berenson called a timeout at the 12:16 mark of the second period. Following the break, the Wolverines held the Pioneers to one shot in the final 27:44 of the game and score five unanswered goals for their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament victory.
Coach Berenson
Red Berenson completed his 15th year as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Coach Berenson owns a career record of 394-197-36 and is tied as the 16th-winningest coach in NCAA history with "Badger" Bob Johnson. Coach Berenson is six wins away from his 400th coaching victory. Berenson has 706 games associated with Michigan hockey (627 as a coach, 79 as a student-athlete).

Saturday's loss capped a successful career for Michigan's seven seniors: Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Greg Crozier (Williamsville, N.Y.), Greg Daddario (Wilton, Conn.), Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.), Sean Ritchlin (Conseco, N.Y.) and Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.). The class can list two NCAA national championships, three CCHA Tournament titles and two GLI titles among its accomplishments. The seniors ended their careers with a 9-2 record in the NCAA Tournament.

Comrie Named CCHA Rookie of the Year
Freshman center Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Year at the 1999 CCHA Awards Banquet on March 18. Comrie led the Wolverines in scoring for the entire season and owns the team's best plus/minus at +18. He was one of two U.S. College hockey players -- with teammate Mike Van Ryn -- to be asked to try out for the Canadian National Junior Team for the 1999 World Junior Championship.
Trio Named to Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team
Freshmen goaltender Josh Blackburn, forward Mike Comrie and defenseman Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) were named to the Bauer/Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Rookie team. Both Blackburn and Jillson were selected to the team unanimously by a vote of the conference coaches.
Van Ryn Earns All-Conference Team Honorable Mention
Sophomore defenseman Mike Van Ryn earned honorable mention on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Conference Team, with 19 points and two first-team votes. Also receiving votes were senior Bubba Berenzweig and Mike Comrie.
Familiar Territory
This year marked Michigan's ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, the longest current streak and third-longest streak in NCAA history.
25 Wins
Michigan won 25 games in each season during the 1990s (1990-91 to present). Over the nine seasons this decade, the Wolverines averaged 32 wins a season.
Postseason Wonder
Sophomore center Mark Kosick tallied 3-6-9 to lead the team in post-season scoring. Kosick had a hand in all three Wolverine goals in the CCHA semifinal victory over Ohio State, scoring twice and assisting on the other. He returned the next night and scored a goal and an assist in the championship game. His performance earned him the CCHA Tournament's MVP award. Last year Kosick led the team in post-season goals and tied Matt Herr for the team lead in scoring with 4-4-8. Kosick has six multiple-point and two multiple-goal efforts in his 14 career postseason games.
Did You Know
Mark Kosick has more multi-point games in the postseason (6) than single-point (3) or pointless (5) games.
Crunch Time
Senior assistant captain Dale Rominski led the team and the nation with eight game-winning goals. Prior to this season, Rominski had played his first three years (109 games) without a game-winning goal.
Bubba Sets New Career High
Senior Bubba Berenzweig led team defensemen and was fourth overall on the team in scoring, with 31 points on seven goals and 24 assists. Berenzweig topped his previous career high of 19 points, established in both his sophomore and junior seasons. With 81 career points, he entered Michigan's top 15 defensman scorers in 13th place.
Comrie on the Leader Board
Mike Comrie finished the season as the team's leading scorer with 44 points, nine better than Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.), the team's second-highest point scorer with 35. The last freshman to lead the team in points was David Roberts (1989-93) in 1989-90, when he scored 21-32-53 in 42 games. The all-time freshman scoring record belongs to Bruno Baseotto (1980), who scored 31-45-76 in 38 games during the 1979-80 season.
Comrie finished second on the team in plus/minus with +19. In acquiring that number, Comrie was plus in 20 games while finishing just seven games with a minus. By finishing -1 on Feb. 6, Comrie broke a string of 19 consecutive games in which he had been even or plus, dating back to Nov. 14, 1998, at Notre Dame.
Solid After Two
Michigan is 103-0-4 in the last 107 games when leading after two periods. The streak dates back to Feb. 11, 1995, when Michigan led the University of Illinois-Chicago 4-3 after two periods before falling 5-4 in overtime.
Racking Up the Minutes
Bobby Hayes, who had 114 PIM this season for a career total of 280 minutes, jumped ahead of Dale Rominski for 12th all-time on the career penalty minute list. Rominski's 80 penalty minutes this season put him in 13th on the list with 277 PIM. The all-time Michigan leader in penalty minutes is Chris Tamer (1990-93) with 515 PIM.
Ironman Competition
Two of the seniors led the way in the Ironman category. Bubba Berenzweig and Sean Ritchlin appeared in each of Michigan's 42 games this season. The other two players who did not miss a game are Mike Comrie and Mark Kosick.
