ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head football coach Lloyd Carr has suspended Demetrius Smith (Calumet Park, Ill./Oak Lawn-Richards HS) for an indefinite period of time following a violation of team rules.

Smith, a sophomore, missed all of the 1998 season folloinwg a knee injury. He saw action in 10 games at fullback as a freshman in 1997, carrying the ball two times for five yards.
