ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team left at least one man on base in all nine innings as the Wolverines dropped a 4-3 decision to Indiana on Monday (May 10) and settled for a split of the four-game series. The loss dropped Michigan to 27-24 on the season and 14-10 in the Big Ten, while Indiana improved to 35-14 overall and 13-11 in the conference. Michigan enters the final weekend of the Big Ten season in third place in the conference, one game up on Indiana and two games ahead of fifth-place Illinois.
The Hoosiers raced out to a 3-0 start with a run in the first inning and another two in the second. The first Indiana batter reached on an error and scored on a two-out single. The Hoosiers opened the second inning with back-to-back singles, a wild pitch and a throwing error to grab a 2-0 lead. They scored their third run with a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.
Michigan got on the board with a two-out rally in the second inning. With two outs and David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) on first base, Michigan put together a single, hit batsman and walk to drive in Parrish but left the bases loaded.
The Wolverines added a second run in the fifth inning when Jason Alcaraz (Alburuergue, N.M./Eldorado HS) opened the inning with a double off the right-centerfield wall and scored when Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS) ripped a two-out single to centerfield. Cervenak, who a day earlier set the U-M career hits record with 268, ended the game with a 4-for-5 performance and one double.
The two schools traded home runs to close the scoring, with Indiana getting a solo shot from Frank O'Connell in the sixth inning and Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) blasting his fifth home run of the season in the seventh inning.
The Wolverines made things interesting in the ninth with one-out singles by Bryan Besco (Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS) and Bush, but Chris Wilson struck out the last two Wolverines to earn his eighth save.
The Wolverines return to action Tuesday (May 11) with a 1 p.m. game at Eastern Michigan at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich., and closes the regular season with a four-game series at Penn State this weekend (May 14-16).
NOTES
• This was the final home game for Michigan's 12 seniors.
• With a double play in the sixth inning, the Wolverines set a new record for double plays in a season. Including a second twin-killing later in the game, Michigan has turned 64 double plays this season. The old record was 62 set in 1997.
