EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team finished in a tie for eighth place at Michigan State's 17-teams Fossum Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday (May 1-2) at Forest Akers West Course.
Michigan was led by solid performances from both Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS), who finished tied for 10th place with a 54-hole total of 221 (five over par). Hayes recorded a career-best finish for the second straight tournament, following a tie for 18th at the Kepler Intercollegiate (April 17-18).
Other Wolverines competing included Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS), Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and Brian Seipke (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City HS). Nick Lossia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) competed as an individual.
Illinois was the team champion, shooting a one-under-par team score of 287 in the final round to finish with a three-round total of 873. The Illini were led by individual champion Larry Nuger, who finished with a tournament-record total of 208 (-6).
