Hendricks Among Candidates for Jim Thorpe Award

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Jim Thorpe Association released its preliminary list of candidates for the 1999 award, with University of Michigan senior strong safety Tommy Hendricks (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) receiving selection as one of 37 honorees. The Jim Thorpe Award is presented annually to the best defensive back in the college football.
Hendricks, a three-year letterman and two-year starter in the secondary, finished his junior campaign second on the team with a career-high 79 tackles (55 solo and 24 assists). He enters 1999 with 25 consecutive starts at safety and has 153 career tackles (99 solo and 54 assists), 11 pass break-ups, two interceptions and one sack. An All-Big Ten Second-Team selection last year, Hendricks was selected preseason All-America Second-Team by Preview Sports Magazine and All-America Honorable Mention by Street & Smith's Magazine. He is listed as the nation's 18th-best defensive back by Lindy's Magazine.

The winner of the 1999 Jim Thorpe Award will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show in December, with the official presentation on Feb. 17, 2000, in Oklahoma City.
