"Being named captain by your teammates is the single greatest honor a Michigan football player can receive and traditionally it is an honor bestowed on young men who are outstanding players and possess outstanding leadership qualities," said Carr.
"Rob Renes has started 25 consecutive games at middle guard, perhaps the single most physically demanding position on the entire football field. Tom Brady displayed exemplary leadership skills a year ago leading the team back from an 0-2 start to 10 wins and a share of the Big Ten championship.
"Steve Hutchinson will take his place among the great linemen who have played at Michigan. As a group these three are quality athletes and students and with the rest of the senior class provide this team with excellent leadership."
Michigan opens the season hosting Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 4 (3:30 p.m. EDT, ABC).
NOTES: Renes has played in 34 games at nose tackle for the Wolverines and is a candidate for All-America and Academic All-America honors ... Renes was a second team All-Big Ten selection in 1998 while collecting 51 tackles (30 solo, 21 assists), tops along U-M's defensive line ... Renes is only the second nose tackle to be a co-captain (Henry Hill in 1970).
Brady, who started all 13 games in 1998, set single-season records for passing attempts (350) and completions (214) while throwing for 2,636 yards (second best total behind Jim Harbaugh's 2,729 in 1986) ... Brady set single-game records for attempts (56), completions (31) and yardage (375) vs. Ohio State (11/21/98) ... Brady is just the fifth quarterback co-captain in U-M history (1970 - Don Moorhead; 1974 - Dennis Franklin; 1986 - Jim Harbaugh; 1992 - Elvis Grbac).
Hutchinson, an All-Big Ten first team selection in 1997 and 1998, has earned preseason All-America honors this season ... "Hutch" has 23 career starts and has played in 24 of 25 games ... The selection of Hutchinson marks the fifth straight season with an offensive lineman as a captain (1995 - Joe Marinaro, 1996 - Rod Payne, 1997 & 1998 - Jon Jansen).
The selection of Renes, Brady and Hutchinson marks the first time since 1976 and only the second time in history that there have been two offensive captains and one defensive captain ... Bo Schembechler introduced co-captains at Michigan in 1970 ... Jim Mandich (1969) was last solo captain ... U-M's first set of co-captains (1970) included quarterback Don Moorhead and middle guard Henry Hill ... first tri-captains (1976) were offensive guard Kirk Lewis, tailback Rob Lytle and linebacker Calvin O'Neal.
