ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) netted her first two goals of the season, including the game-winner 5:26 into overtime, as the University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Utah 3-2 on Sunday (Sept. 12) in front of 412 fans at U-M Soccer Field.
Beitel, hobbled earlier in the season by a hamstring injury, headed a crossing pass from Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) into the lower right hand corner for the game-winner. Freshman Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) started the play with lead pass from the middle of the field to Schmitt on the left side wing. Schmitt controlled the ball near the end line and sent the centering ball into the box for Beitel.
Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) opened the scoring by banging a header into the upper right corner of the net off a crossing feed from Nancy Mather (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster HS) at 27:55.
Utah tied the game with 2:59 left in the first half when Amy Kofoed redirected a free kick just under the cross bar. But Michigan grabbed the lead back just 0:39 before halftime on Beitel's first goal of the game. Beitel collected a loose ball at the top of the box, turned and fired a bullet over the goalie for a 2-1 Wolverine lead.
Utah scored the only goal of the second half when Katie Tate banged in a penalty shot following a controversial hand ball call on Michigan inside the box. The Wolverines, who never trailed in the game, controlled the play for much of the game outshooting the Utes 29-15 and drawing five corners to Utah's two.
Michigan returns to action next weekend when it opens the Big Ten Conference season on the road at Ohio State on Friday (Sept. 17) for a 5 p.m. game and at Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 19) for a 1 p.m. contest.
