Next on the Tee
The University of Michigan men's golf team heads to the Rocky Mountain State to tee off the 1999-2000 season at the Falcon Cross Creek Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy on the Eisenhower Blue Golf Course in Colorado Springs, Colo. The last time U-M played in the Falcon Cross Creek was in 1996, when the Wolverines turned in an impressive third-place finish of 24 teams.
Tournament Format
The Falcon Cross Creek Invite will consist of 20 teams and 54 holes. Scoring will be done in the five-count-four format in which a team plays five individuals, with the best four scores each round counting toward the team score. The only other Big Ten Conference team participating in the field will be the University of Illinois. Air Force Web site: www.airforcesports.com.
The Michigan Lineup
Competing for the Wolverines will be senior captain Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS), sophomores Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forrest Hills Central HS) and Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS), junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) and senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS).
Harris Begins Repeat Campaign
Senior captain Michael Harris begins his campaign to repeat as Big Ten champion as the 1999-2000 season gets underway. Harris became Michigan's 15th conference medalist, tying for the title with a four-round total of 278 at the 1999 meet in Minneapolis, Minn. Harris will go down as one of U-M's all-time greatest golfers as he carries a 73.13 career average, including a Wolverine-record 72.35 average in 1998-99.
Experience Now on the Side of Sophomores
With a year of experience under their belts, U-M's sophomores figure to be a strength on this year's squad, which figures to make a run at an NCAA Tournament berth. Andy Matthews earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors last season while finishing with Michigan's second best scoring average (75.42) along with a 19th-place finish at the conference championship. Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) had a solid freshman campaign in last season, playing in nine of U-M's 12 outings. Twice Chapman finished in the top 10 at a tournament, including a fourth-place showing at the Marshall Invitational.
Harris Tops Field at Northwest Players Meet
Michael Harris carded a one-under-par total of 215 (71-71-73) for a one-stroke victory at the Northwest Players Championship (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) at Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Ore. Harris edged out Oregon's Ryan LaVoie (216) and Washington's Troy Kelly, the 1999 NCAA runner-up, for the championship.
Three Wolverines in Top 10 at GAM Championship
Michael Harris, Andy Matthews and Scott Hayes took part in the Golf Association of Michigan's GAM Championship (Aug. 9-11) at the Country Club of Lansing. Harris (283) was the tournament champion while Hayes (289) and Matthews (293) finished tied for fourth and ninth, respectively.
