STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- By a fairly close margin, the University of Michigan men's cross country team finished third overall today (Saturday, Sept. 18) with 62 points in the Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses. While facing two of the most talented teams in the country -- James Madison and Georgetown -- the Wolverines held strong and kept a narrow point margin to finish behind winner JMU (46 points) and runner-up Georgetown (50).

Running the same course on which the 1999 Big Ten Conference Championships will be contested, Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) and Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) were the top finishers for the Wolverines for the second time in as many races. Wisniewski placed third and crossed the finish line at 25:46.78. Pilja came in eighth with a time of 26:00.72.

Rounding out the top five scoring places for the Wolverines were Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS), Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) and Tom Caughlan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Mason City HS).

The men have next week off but will return to action Friday, Oct. 1, at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind., at 2 p.m.
