COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team opened its fall season with a trip out west and wasted no time setting the pace for the year. The Wolverines not only finished tied for third as a team at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational after round scores of 287-296-298 for a three-round total of 881, but also walked away with the individual title at the tourney, hosted by the Air Force Academy Friday through Sunday (Sept. 17-19).
Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) continued where he left off this summer -- red hot. After being tied with Grand Canyon's John Davis on the 15th hole, Harris birdied the 16th hole to take a one-stroke lead, then parred the 17th and 18th to hold on for the victory. With the win, Harris set a new Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational record as he won the individual title with a nine-under-par total of 207 after rounds of 67-71-69. The old record of 209 was set last year by Nebraska's Steve Fries.
Teammate Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) also finished in the top 20, tying for 19th after rounds of 72-72-77 for a total of 221.
Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) finished tied for 48th (73-77-76/226); Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) finished tied for 74th (78-77-76/231) and Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) finished tied for 84th (75-76-81/232).
The Wolverines travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for their next action to participate in the Xavier Invitational Oct. 11-12 at the Kings Island Resort.
