ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman sensation Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) was the hero again for the University of Michigan women's soccer team, scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season eight minutes into overtime to defeat Illinois 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 24) at U-M Soccer Field. Crumpton gained control of the ball in the Illini's zone and scored the game-winner from 20 yards out.
By winning its Big Ten home opener, No. 22 Michigan (5-2-1, 2-0-1 Big Ten) took over possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference and handed No. 15 Illinois its first league loss. The Fighting Illini (7-2-0, 2-1-0 Big Ten) entered the game as the only league team that was unbeaten and untied in conference action.
In a slow-starting first half, Illinois took a 1-0 lead at 40:12 when Emily Brown was set up by a pass from Lindsay Johnson.
Michigan rebounded fiercely in the second half with many offensive onslaughts. After Crumpton sent a centering pass to the middle of the box, Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) corralled the pass and freed herself with a move around the Illini defender. Beitel's shot was tipped by goalie but trickled into the net at 83:24 to tie the game at one goal apiece.
With 2:30 to play in regulation, Michigan seemed to have won the game when Emily Schmitt's (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) shot caromed off the crossbar to Beitel, who banged the rebound into the open net. However, a controversial offsides call nullified the goal -- the second time U-M had an apparent goal taken off the board in the game -- and the Wolverines went into overtime for the second straight game.
The Wolverines, who outshot the Illini 23-13, including a 16-4 advantage after intermission, return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 26) when they face Iowa at U-M Soccer Field for Parents Day.
