Michigan in Big Ten Openers
The Wolverines won their 18th straight Big Ten Conference opener and have claimed victories in 31 of their last 32 conference openers (the only loss was a 20-9 setback against Wisconsin at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 11, 1982). With U-M's 21-16 victory today, the Badgers became the Wolverines' most common opponent in a conference openers, with 16 games played between the two programs. Michigan has a 15-1 record in those 16 games.
Wolverines Win No. 790
Michigan won its NCAA-leading 790th game with its 21-16 victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener. The Wolverines have a 790-257-36 all-time record in 120 years of Division I-A competition.
Michigan on Artificial Turf
With back-to-back wins against Syracuse (18-13) and Wisconsin (21-16) on artificial turf, the Wolverines improved to 179-33-5 all-time on the surface.
Brady Directs Victory
Senior quarterback Tom Brady (San Mateo, Calif./Serra HS) led the Wolverines on all three scoring drives in the game, completing 17-of-27 passes for 217 yards and two TDs. Brady threw his first two touchdown passes of the 1999 season as he connected with senior fullback Aaron Shea (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa HS) on an eight-yard, first-quarter TD and hit senior wide receiver DiAllo Johnson (Detroit, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) on a 23-yard, third-quarter strike. Brady has a streak of nine consecutive Big Ten games with a touchdown pass (all eight games last year and today's game against the Badgers).
Terrell Scores First Career Rushing TD
Sophomore wide receiver David Terrell (Richmond, Va./Huguenot HS) scored his first career rushing TD on a 45-yard double reverse in the first quarter. Terrell made his fifth career start in the Big Ten opener against the Badgers, catching seven passes for 88 yards. He hauled in four receptions for 35 yards on Michigan's touchdown drive to open the game.
Walker Makes Clutch Catches
Sophomore wide receiver Marquise Walker (Syracuse, N.Y./Henniger HS) came through with three third-down catches against Wisconsin. Walker equaled his career best set earlier this season vs. Rice, collecting five receptions for 49 yards.
A-Train Rolls
Senior tailback Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, La./Winnfield HS) put together an all-around performance against Wisconsin, rushing 22 times for 46 yards, catching three passes for 25 yards and recovering Wisconsin's attempted onside kick near the end of the game. Thomas became the sixth Michigan running back in school history to make 50 career receptions (51 career receptions for 432 yards).
Career Starts and Games Played
-- Senior wide receiver Marcus Knight (Sylacauga, Ala./Comer HS) and junior free safety DeWayne Patmon (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) made their 15th career starts in the Big Ten opener at Wisconsin. Knight caught two passes for 53 yards in the game and returned two punts.
-- Senior defensive players James Hall (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine HS), Tommy Hendricks (Houston, Texas/Eisenhower HS) and Josh Williams (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) all played in their 40th career games at Michigan. Hall made his 25th consecutive start at rush linebacker and 28th career start, while Hendricks started his 29th career game and Williams his 26th contest.
