ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team earned its third consecutive victory, defeating No. 20 Ohio 3-2 on Saturday (Sept. 25) behind two goals from junior Regan Wulfsberg (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown HS). The win boosts U-M's record to 6-3 on the season (1-0 Big Ten).
Michigan, ranked 12th by the NFHCA, took an early 2-0 lead, but Ohio (6-4) managed to tie the game early in the second half. The game stayed tied for nearly 11 minutes until Wulfsberg scored a spectacular goal with assists from Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) with just under 20 minutes to play. The Maize and Blue defenders then took over the game, holding Ohio to just two shots the rest of the way.
Also scoring in the game for the Wolverines was Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) as she notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
"It was nice to be back home in front of our fans," explained Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "Ohio is a very good team and they gave us everything we could handle."
Michigan will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 26) at noon when it will try to extend its perfect series record (2-0) against California.
