Men's Netters Take Court at Tom Fallon Invitational

Senior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) was the consolation runner-up in the 'B' singles flight, posting a 2-2 record. After losing in first-round main draw action, Nano responded with a pair of consolation victories over Alabama's William Boyles (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Indiana's Ari Widlansky (6-1, 6-1) to reach the consolation finals. Nano suffered a straight-set loss to Wisconsin's Dustin Friedman (6-4, 6-2) in the final.
Sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) posted a 1-2 record in the 'A' singles flight, while freshman Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy) and Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) collected their first collegiate wins in the 'C' singles flight. Shaya beat Wisconsin's Jason Gonzaga for fifth place in the consolations (7-5, 6-0) and Held finished fourth after claiming a first-round consolation win over Jimmy Rogers of Notre Dame (4-6, 6-2, 6-4).
In doubles action, Zach Held and Chris Shaya teamed to post a 2-1 record and reach the semifinals of the 'B' flight. They opened with victories over Notre Dame's Jimmy Rogers and Rob Warn (8-4) and Wisconsin's Stefan Reist and Scott Rutherford (9-7) before losing in the semis to Gareth Keating and Jacek Wolicki of Indiana State (9-8, 7-3 in the tie-breaker). Henry Beam and sophomore Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) added a 1-1 record in 'A' flight doubles action.
The Wolverines will return to the courts at the 1999 ITA All-American Championships held Oct. 9-18 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center at the University of Texas (Austin, Texas).
