Women's Tennis Hosts Pair of Home Matches
After a season-opening 5-2 victory against DePaul (Jan. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center, the Michigan women's tennis team returns to action with a pair of home matches. The Wolverines host regional opponent Western Michigan Friday evening (Jan. 28, 6 p.m.) and Yale Sunday afternoon (Jan. 30, 11 a.m.).
Michigan vs. Western Michigan
This will be the 25th meeting between the two in-state schools, with Michigan holding a commanding 19-5 all-time advantage. The Wolverines beat the Broncos 6-3 in last year's opener and have won 10 consecutive matches against Western Michigan. Michigan's last loss to Western Michigan was a 5-4 match during the 1988-89 season.
Wolverines vs. Bulldogs
Michigan will play only its second match against Yale, with the Bulldogs winning the only previous matchup. Yale beat Michigan 6-3 at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Tournament, which was the precursor to the NCAA national tournament, during the 1978-79 season.
Musgrove Nears 10 Wins
Freshman Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) heads into this weekend's matches needing two victories for 10 wins on the year. Musgrove is second on the team with eight victories (8-4) thus far and opened her dual match career with an impressive straight-set win over DePaul's Kadi Hilpus at the No. 3 singles spot (6-2, 6-0). She teamed with senior Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) to post an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles against DePaul's Hilpus and Megan Stewart.
Hart Tallies 60 Career Wins
Senior No. 1 singles player Brooke Hart heads into the weekend matches with 60 career singles victories (60-50 record) and a team-leading 10 wins this year (10-4 record). Hart has won seven of her 10 matches against regional opponents this season (7-2 mark) and boasts a team-best .714 winning percentage. Hart needs nine wins to jump into Michigan's all-time top 10 career singles list in terms of wins.
Weggenman Returns to Lineup
Senior Erryn Weggenman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) returned to the Michigan lineup after missing 15 months due to an elbow injury. Weggenman teamed with junior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) at the No. 2 doubles spot against DePaul, losing an exciting match in a 10-8 tie-breaker (9-8 final score) to Maria Fuzesi and Szilvia Kelemen. Weggenman has compiled a 36-30 career doubles record and has a 44-35 career singles mark.
Lund Eyes Return
Senior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) looks to return to the lineup this weekend after missing the Midwest Regional Championship and season opener with DePaul with a pulled stomach muscle. Lund compiled a 5-4 fall record and needs just one victory to reach 70 in her singles career (69-48 career record). She has a 55-47 career singles record.
