Four Double-Winners Help U-M Cruise Past Indiana

Junior All-Americans Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) each won two events, as did sophomore Jason Mallory (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) and freshman Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS).
Thompson placed first in the 1,650-yard freestyle, turning in an NCAA consideration time of 15:14.71. He also added a first-place performance in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in an NCAA consideration time of 4:27.39. Werner placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA consideration time of 2:00.84, while also taking the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.80).
Mallory turned in first-place performances in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.04) and 400-yard individual medley (4:00.60). Kurth was first in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 50.29 and 1:51.23, respectively.
Three other Wolverines turned in first-place finishes, including sophomore All-American Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS), who placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.61). A freshman duo of Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS) and Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg [Pa.] Academy) placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.10) and 100-yard freestyle (45.70), respectively.
The Wolverines also claimed victories in three of the four relay events. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Hopwood, Kurth, Scott Meyer (Lodi, Calif./Lodi HS) and Jordan Watland (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka HS) was first in a time of 1:30.86. The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Kurth, Meyer, Mangieri and Matt Raines (Owosso, Mich./Corunna HS) finished first at 1:22.60, while the team of Kurth, Watland, Mangieri and Meyer led the charge in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:02.47.
U-M's next meet is Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5) against Michigan State and Ohio State at Canham Natatorium. The meet begins Friday at 6 p.m., with action resuming Saturday at noon.
