Logan's Pin Gives Michigan Victory Over Purdue

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The eighth-ranked Michigan wrestling team defeated the 23rd-ranked Purdue Boilermakers 21-15 Sunday afternoon (Jan. 30) at Carroll High School. With the scored tied 15-15 heading into the final match, seventh-ranked 141-pounder Damion Logan (Garfield, N.J./St. Joseph Regional HS) pinned Luis Blanco with 53 seconds left in the third period to give Michigan the victory.

The Wolverines (9-2-1, 2-1-1 Big Ten) took an early lead as 149-pounder Mike Kulczycki (N. Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) won a 6-3 decision against Purdue's Jimmy Hawthorne. Tony Holifield (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson HS) followed with a 8-6 victory over James Leavell at 157 to give Michigan a 6-0 lead.

Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) won at 174 in a one-point decision against Purdue's Jon Fitch, and the Wolverines increased their lead to 12-4 after ninth-ranked Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) dominated Jared Williams at 184 pounds in an 11-5 decision.

Sixteenth-ranked heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) upset No. 9 Jake Vercelli in a tight 3-1 decision to put Michigan up 15-7, but the Boilermakers (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten) made a comeback with two major decisions at 125 and 133 pounds to tie the score at 15-15 with the final match remaining.

The Wolverines will have two weeks off before their showdown with the third-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
