Balanced Attack Leads Michigan Past Arizona State

Leading U-M was sophomore All-American Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS), who turned in two first-place finishes. Siciliano won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:24.24, leading a U-M 1-2-3-4 finish. Junior All-American Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS), senior tri-captain and All-American Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) and sophomore Chuck Kennedy (Concord, Calif./Northgate HS) placed second through fourth, respectively.
Siciliano also led a Michigan 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard individual medley by clocking in at 1:50.36. Junior All-American Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) was second and true freshman Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) finished third. Werner later turned in a first-place performance in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:00.48.
Michigan turned in a third 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle as Thompson led the charge with the first-place effort (8:57.56), setting a Plummer Center record. McWha and freshman Justin Drake (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia HS) finished second and third, respectively.
The remaining Wolverine first-place finishes were turned in by a freshmen trio of Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg [Pa.] Academy), Paul Ely (Beaverton, Ore./Sunset HS) and Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS). Mangieri turned in the top time in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:38.55. Ely had a time of 1:51.14 in the 200-yard butterfly, and Earhart finished the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.18.
Senior tri-captain Josh Trexler (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), a two-time Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week selection this season, finished in second place in both the one- and three-meter dives.
Michigan's next meet is tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 8) at third-ranked University of Arizona at 1 p.m. MST.
