Comeback Win Gives U-M Johnson Nissan Classic Title

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the game, including sophomore forward Jed Ortmeyer's (Omaha, Neb.) second goal of the game, gave the second-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team a 4-3 win over the University of Alaska Anchorage in the final game of the Johnson Nissan Classic on Saturday (Oct. 14). Ortmeyer's goal came with only 3:48 remaining, just two minutes after Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored to tie the game at 3-3.
With the win, the Wolverines captured the Johnson Nissan Classic championship for the first time. Langfeld was voted by the media as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament for his efforts on the weekend, and Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) earned All-Classic honors.
In a repeat of last night (Oct. 13) against Merrimack, Michigan fell behind 2-1 after the first period. Again, it was the opposition which struck first. Following a flurry in the crease seven minutes into the game, Alaska Anchorage found the net when Matt Shasby fired a low shot which beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) to make the score 1-0. Michigan tied the game when Ortmeyer landed a slapshot from the right face-off circle for his first goal of the season. However, UAA took back the lead when Shasby punched in the puck, which was bouncing at the top of the crease, for his second goal of the period. The goal came nine seconds into the Seawolves' power play and with just 1:25 remaining in the period.
In the second period, Michigan tied the game with a display of skill from sophomore Hilbert. Grabbing a loose puck in the neutral zone, Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) passed the puck to Langfeld in the neutral zone. Langfeld fed the puck to Hilbert who was in front of the defense. Hilbert carried the puck alone into the offensive zone, faked UAA goaltender Chris King hard to the left, brought it back to his right and lifted the puck into the top corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
After a few more chances, including a breakaway just past the halfway mark of the period, the Seawolves found the net with 27 seconds remaining in the second period to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission before the Michigan comeback.
Michigan returns to the lower 48 states to face Bowling Green State on Friday and Sunday (Oct. 20-22) in Bowling Green, Ohio. The 7:05 p.m. games mark the opening weekend of CCHA play for the Wolverines.
