ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to clinch a 3-1 victory over Big Ten Conference rival Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at the U-M Soccer Field.
The Wolverines (8-6, 6-3 Big Ten) had many opportunities to score in the first half, outshooting the Buckeyes 20-3. Michigan's defense kept Ohio State's number of shots low by providing excellent coverage and keeping control of the ball. Freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) only faced nine shots on goal throughout the entire game. However, at 12:08 of the first half OSU midfielder Kiley Enmark booted the ball past Grech on a pass from Emily Thorpe to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, Michigan went to work, spending much of the period in front of Ohio State's goalkeeper. At 56:41, sophomore Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) scored an unassisted goal to even the score a one. Michigan continued its overwhelming offense, attacking with 21 more shots.
With the game looking as though it could be heading for overtime, senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) broke the tie on an unassisted goal at 82:05. Less than three minutes later, at 85:10, freshman forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) sealed the victory on a pass from Beitel.
The Wolverines return to the U-M Soccer Field on Friday (Oct. 20) when they take on Northwestern at 4 p.m.
