ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After 120 minutes of play, the University of Michigan women's soccer team and the Northwestern Wildcats called a truce and ended up with a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Friday (Oct. 20) at U-M Soccer Field.
The Maize and Blue outshot the Wildcats 39-19 and had many missed opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. The game was a defensive battle until the final 10 minutes of play saw several breakaways denied by superior goalkeeping by U-M's Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) and Northwestern's Erin Ekeberg.
The Wolverines almost pulled off the victory in the last two minutes of the second overtime when Kacy Beital (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) and Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) had breakaway shots that went wide.
The Wolverines close out the Big Ten Conference regular season with a 6-3-1 league mark. Although a U-M win would have secured at least a tie for second place, the tie gives the Wolverines 19 points in the standings and at least a tie for third place. The league leaders (not including Wisconsin's Friday night match at Minnesota) are: regular-season champion Penn State (24 points, 8-0); Michigan (19, 6-3-1); Wisconsin (18, 6-3); Illinois (18, 6-4); Michigan State (16, 5-3-1).
Michigan (8-6-1, 6-3-1 Big Ten) will be back at home on Sunday (Oct. 22) to face Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 1 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
