ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team held off a strong, physical second half by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to win 3-2 at the U-M Soccer Field on Sunday (Oct. 22).
Michigan got off to a strong offensive start, scoring its first goal of the game at 7:29 on a shot from senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS). Freshman midfielder Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) assisted Beitel on her fourth goal of the season.
The Wolverines continued their scoring success at 26:24 when senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) booted in a pass from Wilson to make the score 2-0. Two minutes later, junior Abby Tompkins (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett HS) caught a pass from Beitel to give Michigan a three-goal lead.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee came out strong in the second half, attempting 14 shots and spending much of the period in front of Michigan senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS).
The Panthers finally got on the scoreboard at 76:23 with a shot by Amy Oechsner from Jeney Walter. With a minute and a half left to play in the game, Panther Erin Blaedowell nailed an unassisted kick past Stewart to bring the score within one.
The Wolverines held tight for the remainder of the game, keeping control of the ball and the clock. Both teams played a physical game that accounted for 29 fouls.
Stewart had a calm first half in the net, with the Panthers attempting only two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Stewart made seven saves in the second half to bring her saves total to 52 this season.
Michigan distinguished their senior soccer players prior to the start of the match. Beitel, Spaccarotella and Stewart were honored, along with Stephanie McArdle (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet HS) and Jessica Parmalee (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute).
The Wolverines will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday (Oct. 24) when they face the undefeated and top-ranked Notre Dame at 3 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field.
