ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team opened the 2000-01 regular season with a 2-2 draw against No. 16 Colgate University in the 2000 Ice Breaker Cup, presented by Ameritech/SBC, tonight (Friday, Oct. 6) in front of 6,130 at Yost Ice Arena. The Red Raiders advanced to the championship game of the tournament with a 2-0 shootout win over the Wolverines, leaving Michigan to face No. 1 North Dakota, which fell in a shootout to New Hampshire, in the third-place game at 5:05 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 7).
The score was tied 2-2 after three periods of play, and neither team could score in the five-minute overtime period so the game went to a five-man shootout. Colgate's first two shooters, P.J. Yedon and Sam Sturgis, beat Michigan goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), while Michigan's first four shooters came up empty against Red Raider goalie Jason Lefevre, allowing Colgate to advance.
The game saw Colgate (0-0-1) take the lead twice, only to have the Wolverines respond and tie the contest each time. Michigan evened the score at 2-2 with just 1:10 left in the second period on Josh Langfeld's (Coon Rapids, Minn.) power-play goal, his second goal of the game. On the play, Mike Cammalleri's (Richmond Hill, Ontario) shot from the blue line sailed over the net but deflected off the boards and bounced out in front of the crease, and Langfeld was able to flip the puck over Lefevre's outstretched glove.
The Red Raiders opened the scoring 3:29 into the first period. With Michigan's Jay Vancik (West Bloomfield, Mich.) serving a penalty, Yedon passed from the right post to Sean Nolan, who deked Blackburn and slid the puck under a diving Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) to put Colgate ahead 1-0.
Michigan (0-0-1) knotted the game at 1-1 midway through the first period. Burnes' shot from inside the blue line deflected off Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) and trickled to the left post where Langfeld stuffed it into the open net. It marked the second consecutive season in which Langfeld has tallied his first goal in the Wolverines' opening game.
Colgate reclaimed the lead on Nolan's second goal of the game, with seven minutes left in the period. Kevin Johns skated behind the net and dropped a pass to Nolan, who beat Blackburn from in tight to give the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Both goaltenders saw plenty of action during their first regular-season contest. Lefevre stopped 30 Wolverine shots during the game, while Blackburn finished with 19 saves, including eight during the third period. Nolan garnered game MVP honors for the Red Raiders, while Langfeld was named MVP for the Wolverines.
Michigan's power play, which last season scored on 20 percent of its chances, went 1 for 12 during the game, registering 15 shots. During the second period, the Wolverines had a man advantage for a total of eight minutes but came up with just one power-play goal on seven shots.
The Wolverines face defending national champion North Dakota in the third-place game on Saturday (Oct. 7) at 5:05 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena, to be followed by the 8:35 p.m. championship game between Colgate and New Hampshire, which also advanced by virtue of a shootout win.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the power play ... "I can't tell you we didn't get any scoring chances, but we're not producing on the power play the way we need to. When you get those chances, you need to take advantage of them and make the other team pay for them. We weren't able to do that."
On the outcome ... "It does feel like a loss, because we didn't win. Even a tie at home is not a good feeling, unless it's a come-from-behind tie, and you feel lucky to tie. But I didn't feel lucky to tie."
On tomorrow's game against North Dakota ... "The weekend all comes down to tomorrow's game now, and we need to have a good game. A lot of people wanted to see Michigan play North Dakota, and they're going to get their wish, just at a different time. So, it'll be a good challenge for our team, and it'll be a good challenge for North Dakota. Hopefully, it will be a great game."
Colgate Head Coach Don Vaughan
On the shootout ... "I'm not a big fan of the shootout; I've gone on record saying that. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the goaltenders and the shooters. It's a team game. In tournaments like this, it's great for the crowd; our bench liked it. At that point it's a tie anyway, and we were looking at it that way and just tried to have some fun with it."
On his team's play ... "I thought it was pretty good for our first game. A lot of special teams play is going to slow it down a little bit. When the ice was good and we were playing five-on-five, for our first night, I thought it was pretty good."
On playing at Yost Arena ... "I love it here. This is one of the storied programs in the country, and they've taken such good care of us since we've been here. Even the last time we were out here. It's great for a program like ours to be able to come in and compete. It's great for our people and alumni to see how things are done here and take that back into our own program. We're thrilled to be here and hopefully, we'll be able to get back here sometime."
