ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team has announced the signing of two players to its 2000-01 recruiting class. The Wolverines landed two of the top players in the Midwest in Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and Carrie Ritchie (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive HS).
"I really like the things these two kids are going to bring to our program," said head coach Mark Rosen. "We have added two extremely athletic kids as well as excellent volleyball players to our team. What I like the most about this class is that both of these kids have excellent all-around skills in addition to their athletic abilities."
Gandolph, a 6-1 outside hitter, earned all-state first-team honors and led her team to the Indiana state championship this season. Gandolph dominated the state title contest with 22 kills.
"First of all, Gandolph is a tremendous athlete with good size and brings major heat as an attacker," stated Rosen. "However, she is not just an attacker. She has great passing and ball control skills to go with her explosive attacking."
Ritchie, a 5-10 outside hitter, was recently named the Ohio Division I Player of the Year and was the first Wolverine to commit to Rosen this year.
"Ritchie is a player who had a great senior year," said Rosen. "She is a little smaller than Gandolph but has very similar skills. Ritchie is a big-time leaper and also possesses great defensive skills. Anytime you can combine great defensive range with solid attacking skills you have a player who can compete in the Big Ten."
The Wolverines are currently 16-10 overall and 6-9 in the Big Ten in 2000, which puts them in seventh place in the conference with five matches remaining in the regular season.
