WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team went down 3-2 to No. 4 Wake Forest on a penalty-stroke goal by Jenny Everett 30 seconds into overtime in the NCAA Regional final Sunday (Nov. 12) at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium. The contest was a rematch of last season's regional final in which the Wolverines came out on top via a penalty stroke in double overtime at Kentner Stadium.
The Maize and Blue looked like it had the game well in hand after goals by April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) at 10:14 of the first half and Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) at 25:28 of the second to take the Wolverines to a 2-0 lead.
However, less then a minute later, Demon Deacon Kelly Doton scored the first of her two goals of the game to close the gap on Michigan to 2-1. Doton put another shot past goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) to even the score at 2-2 at the 21:02 mark.
The game looked like dj vu from last season when the teams went into overtime tied at two. This time though luck was on WFU's side as the Demon Deacons' Everett put in the game-winner on a penalty stroke. Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) substituted for Tasch -- who played solid in net for the second straight game, recording 14 saves -- for the penalty stroke attempt.
The Wolverines ended their season with a 19-4 overall record.

On replacing Maureen Tasch for the penalty stroke winner ... "Molly (Maloney) is our penalty stroke goalkeeper and she almost made a tremendous save on a player like Jenny Everett."
U-M Senior Forward Kelli Gannon
On playing her last game as a Wolverine ... "We played our hearts out. It hasn't really hit me yet because I wasn't expecting to lose. We played well enough to win. It just wasn't meant to be."
