Michigan Drops 73-60 Tilt to Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team came back less than 48 hours from its season-opening win over No. 8 Louisiana Tech and suffered a 73-60 loss to Washington Sunday afternoon (Nov. 19) at Crisler Arena. The Wolverines (1-1), who never led in the contest, were led offensively by post players Raina Goodlow (Detroit, Mich./Dominican HS) and LeeAnn Bies (Lakeview, Mich./Lakeview HS), who collected 17 and 16 points, respectively.
The Wolverines and Huskies (1-1) split the first 12 points of the contest before a three from Huskie sophomore Megan Franza gave Washington a 9-6 lead. Washington would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the first half. Paced by four first-half treys Washington pushed its lead to as much as 11 at 36-25.
However, Michigan, which shot .545 (12-22) from the field in the first stanza put together a 10-0 run to shave the lead to one. The Michigan run was led by junior guard Alayne Ingram (Lansing, Mich./Waverly HS), who contributed a pair of assists that led to Michigan layups as well as a three-point bucket of her own. Washington ended the Michigan run with a conventional three-point play by Giuliana Mendiola with 0:09 remaining in the half and took a 39-35 lead into the intermission.
After Washington scored the first hoop of the second half to lead by six, Michigan went back to work in the post. Junior forward Heather Oesterle (Mason, Mich./Mason HS) and Goodlow each collected baskets in the paint as Michigan regained its momentum from late in the first half and tied the contest at 46 at the 14:18 mark after an 11-5 run. Washington went back up 48-46, but Bies came right back with a hook in the lane to tie the game back up at 48. The momentum of the game switched on the next possession, however, as Mendiola drilled a pull-up triple to give Washington a lead it would not relinquish.
From there, the Huskies methodically increased their lead to nine (60-51), but a Goodlow layup on a nice dish from Thorius brought the Wolverines within five (60-55) with seven minutes to play. That was as close as the Wolverines would get, however, as Washington answered with a triple from Andrea Lalum and Michigan was able to connect on just two more field goals in the final seven minutes. Washington held Michigan to just .267 (8-30) shooting in the second half and .385 (20-52) shooting for the game.
Michigan goes on the road for the first time in the 2000-01 season with a trip to the University of Hawaii for the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Wolverines face Arkansas in the first round on Friday, Nov. 24 (11:10 a.m. HST) in the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

-- Raina Goodlow has led Michigan in points in each of its first two games, scoring 17 on both occasions.
-- Heather Oesterle was a perfect 6-6 at the charity stripe in the loss. She is now 8-8 after two games this season.

On the game overall ... "Everything we did in the win on Friday -- playing defense, getting loose balls, consistently knocking down free throws -- we did not do today. We completely broke down defensively as a team, whether we were in man or zone defense."
On the play of Washington ... "They played very well and they did a good job shooting the ball from the perimeter. They had five kids on the floor that were capable of scoring from anywhere on the court and we did not do a good job of contesting their looks in the half court."
