Wolverines Conquer Four Titles at the MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Wrestling in the its last preseason tournament of the 2000-01 campaign, the seventh-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team captured four individual crowns and boasted three second-place performers at the Michigan State Open on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 18-19).
Winning their respective weight classes were Mike Kulczycki (N. Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) at 149 pounds, Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) at 174, Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards) at 184 and Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) at heavyweight.
Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School), Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) and Joe DeGain (White Lake, Mich./Clarkson HS) earned second-place finishes but lost their championship matches by a total of four points. Dowd lost 3-2 at 133, Forward lost 7-6 at 141 and DeGain dropped a 7-5 decision at 197.
Michigan will decide its starting lineup after the Maize and Blue intrasquad meet at Cliff Keen Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 22) at 7 p.m.
