MADISON, Wis. -- Despite allowing a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the game, the seventh-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team held off the attack from 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin for a 3-2 College Hockey Showcase win tonight (Thursday, Nov. 23) in front of 11,274 fans at the Kohl Center. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) led way with a goal and two assists to tie his career high with three points, and Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) added two assists in the game.
Michigan (9-3-0) started the game with a pair of goals in the first six minutes. On the first shift, Cammalleri took a pass from Jillson and headed down the right side of the offensive zone. As he approached, he simply flipped the puck at Badger netminder Graham Melanson, and it cleared his shoulder, hit the crossbar and fell into the goal to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game.
Michigan then took a 2-0 lead when Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) banged in a rebound on the right side of the crease at the 5:49 mark of the first period. After getting a pass from John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), Cammalleri took a shot from the blue line which bounced off of Melanson's pads to Mink.
Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) scored his College Hockey Showcase-leading sixth point (1-5-6) to give Michigan a 3-0 lead six minutes into the second period. After Cammalleri fed him a pass from the neutral zone, Kosick walked in alone and beat Melanson top-shelf on the glove side.
Michigan lost the shutout when the Badgers (8-7-0) battled back with a pair of goals in the last five minutes of the game. The first goal came at the 15:03 mark of the third period after Dany Heatley stole the puck and fed Rene Bourque, who then beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) through his five-hole. David Hukalo scored the other goal with just 1:17 left on the clock. With the Wisconsin goalie pulled and Michigan's Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) in the penalty box, Heatley fed Hukalo who was waiting on the left side of crease.
Michigan wraps up its share of the College Hockey Showcase on Saturday (Nov. 25) against the No. 2 Minnesota Golden Gophers in Minneapolis, Minn. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. CST.
