Fast Start for a Frosh
Wrestling in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Jeremiah Tobias broke into the U-M history books when he recorded four straight falls at the Eastern Michigan Open (Nov. 4). Tobias tied William Courtright (1941-47) for sixth place on Michigan's consecutive falls list.
Hrovat Expected to Redshirt
Junior Andy Hrovat, a 1999 All-American, is slated for a redshirt season. Hrovat currently is ranked 11th by AWN, but is likely to take the year off of team competition and test the waters in various open tournaments throughout the season to improve his skills, so he can make a run at a national championship in his last two years. Hrovat has already won individual titles at the MSU Open (Nov. 19) and West Virginia Open (Nov. 11) and was a respectable 1-1 at the prestigious Sunkist Open (Nov. 4), which featured top national competitors.
Century Club Initiation
No. 1-ranked Otto Olson returned to the mat after a knee injury cut his season short in 1999-2000 and became the 18th member of U-M's 100-win club with four victories at the EMU Open. Olson's 101st victory came over fourth-ranked Mike Feeney of Eastern Michigan with a 5-4 decision in the championship final at 174. Olson moved into a tie for 14th with Bill Lacure (1995-98) on Michigan's all-time win list (106) at the MSU Open.
Captains Announced
Fifth-year senior Otto Olson was named the Wolverines team captain for the second straight year. Assisting Olson in leadership duties will be fifth-year senior Joe DeGain, who will reserve the title as co-captain.
Martelli's Back at 165
After filling in for Otto Olson last season at 174 pounds, Charles Martelli will compete this year at his more natural weight of 165. Martelli was an incredible surprise last season -- in which he was supposed to be redshirted -- when he placed sixth at the Big Ten Championships. This will be Martelli's third straight season in the starting lineup.
Redshirt Freshmen Ready to Go
Foley Dowd, Clark Forward and Pat Owen are three talented redshirt freshmen who will get a chance to show their worth in the starting lineup at 133, 141 and 157, respectively. Dowd, ranked 11th, and Forward, ranked 18th, are 1999 prep All-Americans who have won individual titles at the EMU Open. Forward comes into the season after winning the Fila Junior Freestyle National Championship at 137.5 pound this past summer. Owen was 19-5 in open tournaments last year and placed third at this season's EMU Open.
Sun Bathing
Highly touted freshman Chris Rodrigues, ranked as the nation's top recruit by Intermat, is the first Wolverine to be included in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. Rodrigues was the "Old Spice" prep athlete of the month in SI's February 2000 issue. The 125-pounder is expected to redshirt this season.
Wolverines Dubbed Seventh in the Intermat Poll
