ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team lost its final regular-season game on a chilly Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4), falling 3-0 to No. 20-ranked Ohio State in front of 901 fans at Elbel Field. The Wolverines played short-handed most of the match after Steve Walton (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) received a red card at the 12:25 mark, forcing U-M to play one man down the rest of the match.
Ohio State (9-4-4, 2-2-2 Big Ten) had two goals in the first half, three minutes apart from one another. Tray Halberdier put a header in the back of the net off a corner kick for the first goal of the afternoon with 24:18 on the clock. Three minutes later (27:18), Justin Cook had a breakaway and put the ball in the right corner from 15 yards out past goalkeeper Brad King (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS).
Michigan (6-9, 1-5 Big Ten) had eight shots in the half, including two on goal, but the Wolverines were unable to get on the board. The two teams battled back and forth controlling the tempo, but the Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Ohio State did not take long to add its third goal of the afternoon once play resumed in the second half. On a counter attack, Roger Roush's chip shot from 15 yards out went just over the outstretched hands of King. The Wolverines' offense stayed focused and maintained pressure on the Buckeyes' backfield. U-M had five corner kicks in the period but was unable to put any shots toward the goal.
The Wolverines' next match is at the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 9) in Columbus, Ohio. The opponent and game time will be announced on Sunday (Nov. 5).
