Wolverines Stick It to Wildcats, Win Third Straight

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Northern Michigan University goaltender Craig Kowalski's glove hand proved to be the key to the fifth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team's 6-2 win tonight (Friday, Dec. 1) in front of 3,789 fans at the Berry Events Center. The Wolverines scored four times on Kowalski's stick hand, including a goal by Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) just 15 seconds into the game, to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first 22 minutes of the game before he was pulled from the game.
After firing the puck from the right point to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead on the first shift of the game, Jillson earned an assist on Mike Cammalleri's (Richmond Hill, Ontario) power-play goal with 3:37 remaining in the first period to give Michigan a two-goal lead after the first period. Cammalleri scored the goal, his seventh point on the team's previous nine goals, on a one-timer from the high slot on a pass from John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).
Michigan (11-3-2, 7-3-0 CCHA) opened the second period in the same fashion as the first. With Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) in the penalty box, Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) fired a short-handed shot from the right side which led to a large rebound on the right. Trailing the play was Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.), who fired the rebound in the net for a short-handed goal just 50 seconds into the period.
Forty-five seconds later, Cammalleri scored his second goal of the game, giving him 11 points and four multi-point games in his last five outings. Assisting on the goal was Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.), who added an unassisted goal late in the game to give him 11 points and extend his scoring streak to six games.
Northern Michigan (7-5-4, 5-5-3 CCHA) scored twice in the last eight minutes of the second period, but that was the only time the Wildcats found the scoreboard in the game. Bryce Cockburn scored both of the goals for the Wildcats, including the second with just 1:31 left on the clock.
Despite the late goal by NMU, Michigan regained some momentum with a goal by Ortmeyer less than a minute left in the period. Michigan closed out the scoring with Hilbert's unassisted goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
Despite the victory, Michigan suffered two injuries in the first period. The Wolverines lost defenseman Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) to a rib injury midway through the stanza after he was checked along the bench and the edge of the boards caught him between his hockey pants and the chest protector on his shoulder pads. He is not scheduled to play in Saturday's (Dec. 2) game.
Also going down in the first period was associate head coach Mel Pearson. With Northern about to clear the puck, Pearson bent over to avoid getting hit. As he stood back upright, the puck caught him in the side of the head. Pearson remained on the bench for the remainder of the period but required several stitches to close the wound during the intermission.
Michigan faces Northern Michigan again tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 2) at 7:05 p.m. at the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
