DETROIT -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team went down to the Michigan Tech Huskies 7-3 on Friday evening (Dec. 29) in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Invitational in front of 17,744 spectators at Joe Louis Arena. It marked the Wolverines' first semifinal loss in the GLI since 1987.
The first period was a see-saw battle until Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) scored with 1.1 seconds left, taking the score to 1-0 to end the period. The assist went to Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.).
Michigan Tech (4-13-1) retaliated 48 seconds into the second period, when the Huskies' Paul Cabana tied the score at one apiece, and MTU went up 2-1 with a four-on-four goal by Mat Snesrud. Michigan captain Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) evened the game at 2-2 at the 9:10 mark, but again the Huskies answered at 16:48, and the second period ended with Michigan Tech up 3-2.
The Huskies increased their lead 2:30 into the third period on a goal from Matt Uwlwelling. Michigan answered with David Wyzgowski's (North Street, Mich.) first career goal when he redirected a slap shot from Jay Vancik (Medina, Ohio) at 7:25, narrowing the Tech advantage to 4-3. The Wolverine comeback was halted by three unanswered Michigan Tech goals, including one empty-netter, ending the game at 7-3.
Michigan (13-4-3) was without three top players -- Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) -- who are competing in the World Junior Championship in Russia. Cammalleri is currently the leading scorer for Team Canada, while Hilbert and Komisarek are playing for Team USA, with Hilbert leading the Americans in scoring.
The Wolverines will return to Joe Louis Arena tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 30) for the third-place game against second-ranked Boston College at 4:05 p.m.
