Before the evening's matches, the team honored senior Joe Warren (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood HS) as part of Senior/Alumni Night. Warren, ranked fourth, opened the meet at 133 pounds with a forfeit win for his 94th career victory.
"It would have been nice to wrestle for the last time at Cliff Keen Arena, in front of Michigan's great fans, but whatever helps the team is what matters," Warren said.
Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS), ranked 20th at 149, erased a 5-2 deficit in the third period and scored a last-second victory with a two-point reversal as time expired to defeat Tim Myers 8-7.
"It sets the stage for next week," said Kulczycki, looking ahead to matchups at Penn State and Ohio State. "We have two tough matches and we'll take it from there."
With the match tied 9-9, Jason Rawls (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) scored a 13-4 major decision over Matt Nichwitz at 165. Following a scoreless first period, Rawls broke out with nine points in the second en route to his victory. Rawls' victory put gave Michigan a 13-9 advantage, a lead the Wolverines never relinquished.
"I wanted to get redemption," Rawls said. "I didn't think I was offensive enough, but a win is a win. Next week, we'll have to come back bigger."
Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) built on Michigan's lead, besting Mingo Morrison 11-8 at 174. Sixth-ranked Andy Hrovat (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) followed with an 11-3 major decision against 20th-ranked Ty Matthews at 184.
Hrovat was enthusiastic with his team's performance. "Today we looked like we were supposed to look. We tired them out."
Fifteenth-ranked Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) clinched the victory for the Maize and Blue with a 2-0 decision over Michael Dixon at heavyweight.
"I'm pleased the way our guys fought tonight," said head coach Joe McFarland. "We've got guys banged up, so it was nice to see them bounce back and go at it out there."
The Wolverines will be on the road next weekend to close out the regular season, facing Penn State on Friday (Feb. 18) at 7:30 p.m. and Ohio State on Sunday (Feb. 20) at 2 p.m.
