Wolverines Win Nine Events at Silverston Invitational

Top performances of the meet came from junior Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who won the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet. Sophomore Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) came in second with the same height. Sheffer's mark was also an individual best in that event.
In the distance events, Michigan was led by senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) in the 5,000 meters. Lawrence blew away the field by provisionally qualifying for the NCAAs with a time of 14:05.40. He was followed by junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who posted a time of 14:32.90, completing a 1-2 finish for the Wolverines.
Coming in first for the Maize and Blue in the short events were sophomore Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS), who ran away with the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.02; senior Steve Jenkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS) in the 60-meter dash (6.92); and sophomore Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) in the 400-meter dash (50.25).
Other Wolverine winners were junior Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS) in the shot put with a distance of 53 feet, 3 1/2 inches and senior Patrik Johansson (Ramnas, Sweden/Tingralla), who was victorious in the 35-lb. weight throw with a heave of 56 feet, 3 1/4 inches.
The Wolverines also went on to post a team win in the 1,600-meter relay as the Michigan "B" team (3:21.15) squeaked by the Michigan "A" team (3:21.53).
The Wolverines will travel to Bloomington, Ind., next for the Big Ten Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 26-27) on the campus of Indiana University.
